Phil says it helps not to be in the business. That way he can stay curious. The more curious he is, the better questions he can ask. As he is looking at a business from the outside in, it gives him a different perspective from the owner.

Why did you do it that way?
Business owners hate those questions. The answer is usually, I did it like that in my old business, or, we've always done it like that. As Phil says, those are TERRIBLE answers.
