Listen "Salt, Light, and Fulfillment of the Law"
Episode Synopsis
This morning we continue in our study through the gospel according to Matthew as we look at Matthew 5:13-20. Jesus teaches his disciples, "You are the salt of the earth," and "You are the light of the world." Jesus tells his followers, "In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 5:16). On our own we could never be salt, light, or enter the kingdom of heaven based on our righteousness. In his grace, Jesus offers to us his very righteousness. We can be declared right in God's sight. This is received as a gift of God through faith. Jesus can call his people salt and light because he fulfilled all righteousness. In the gospel of God's grace, disciples of Jesus can be called salt and light as they live in the world. They can bring life and glory to the Father in heaven out of a heart that's been transformed by Jesus. In the person and work of Jesus, all of God's people can reflect the goodness and mercy of God.
