Listen "Jesus Calls The Twelve"
Episode Synopsis
This morning we continue in our study through the gospel according to Matthew as we consider Matthew 10:1-25. Jesus calls twelve apostles who learn from him and are sent out in his authority. These individuals were not special or deserving of Jesus' call. Jesus calls flawed individuals to him and then equips them for the ministry that he has for them. Jesus teaches his disciples what they are to do, how they are to do it, and what they will face as they're sent out. Jesus calls his disciples to go and proclaim, "The kingdom of heaven is at hand." As the disciples are sent out, they can expect resistance and persecution. Disciples of Jesus can expect to be treated in similar ways to how Jesus was treated. Jesus taught, "A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master" (Matthew 10:24). Jesus calls his disciples to bear witness, share about him, and suffer with him for his name's sake. Christians can take comfort that while we will experience persecution and suffering, because of Jesus we no longer have to fear death. Jesus experienced the ultimate persecution, suffering, and death on the cross that any who believe in Jesus would live forever with him. Out of appreciation for his work, we go and proclaim the good news of the kingdom of heaven.
