On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul is joined by returning guest Collins Mureithi to tell us what’s going on in Africa including bad leadership with is contributing to a lot of injustices in countries and communities.

One of the things that’s going on in Africa that is criminal is bad leadership. We have leaders who are politicians and one of the things that defines Africa is that we have so many politicians that are not leaders. We tend to choose politicians before leaders – Nelson Mandela was a leader before he was a politician – many Africans don’t understand who is the right leader, and it has lead to a lot of accumulations of wealth, taking advantage of the communities and the resources that are supposed to be used in the communities.
I love the WGC family because most of the people there are servant leaders, something we as Africans really want to understand and also be able to practice. At the end of the day we can really feel that these Africans who are also doing amazing work in the community can also learn what is happening in your countries: why is it a developed country? Why is Africa still behind? It’s very important to exchange ideas and learn from one another.
Young people are watching what the leaders and people of influence are doing. As a child you will always help your leader or be influenced by what is happening. As many of our leaders are corrupt and engaged in corrupt activities, this really affects the young people and children and it makes the community in Africa to be in a really bad state. People in influence and leaders are taking advantage of self-interest, they don’t want to thin about other people. But, I’m glad we’re starting to have these conversations and asking how we can move away from corruption and how corruption is affecting our communities.
In rural, grass roots communities there’s a lot of female genital mutilation (FGM) happening. One of the reasons for this is political. I think some of the leaders are also taking away the opportunity to empower the community to understand FGM. They are the forefathers, the family members of the people doing FGM so they enact the laws. Secondly, there’s a lack of information, people focus on issues with agriculture, health, but they don’t want to go through deep conversation about why FGM is happening. That’s why some of us have started to take initiative personally because we can wait for the institutions and the government to solve the problems – it will take too much time. We will have the conversations with leaders, elders, religious leaders, stakeholders and the police.
