Madeleine's passion for education led her to Pacific Coffee Research on the Big Island of Hawai'i, a women-owned business that offers educational opportunities in the coffee industry for various audiences, aiming to increase appreciation for coffee through understanding its journey from farm to cup. She also holds a Q Arabica Grader license from the Coffee Quality Institute, qualifying her as a professional coffee taster, a role that requires a mindful and focused approach to evaluating coffee in multiple categories. Lucy and Madeleine discuss the environmental, social and economic sustainability issues in the coffee industry, including the carbon footprint of international coffee trade, gender equality in farming and the importance of treating coffee farms as businesses.
