Along the way, they are joined by a stranger who engages them with a string of questions that spans the Bible, reminding the mournful disciples (chiding them, really) of God’s promises. Only when the stranger is invited to dinner and the bread is broken, do they recognize this mysterious stranger as Jesus…and then he disappears.
