Episode Synopsis

Welcome to the Saving Throes podcast! This is my Tabletop role-playing game podcast, part of the Red Rooster's Gaming Coop network where I talk gaming and gaming culture every week. Each episode will feature a topic or theme along with my take on current happenings in the world of tabletop role-playing games and semi regular updates on the games I am currently involved with, or new games or products I have come across. On this week's Behind the Screen segment, I am looking at character advancement and my preferred methods on how to handle it in D&D and D&D-alike games. This can be a touchy subject to players if they are going to dedicate hours and hours of their time over the course of a campaign, so it is important they know upfront how character advancement will work. Most modern editions of D&D from 3e onward focus on giving players bundles of features and power-ups that make them feel more and more heroic as they go, but I posit that the old school approach of less powers is more liberating. In modern D&D players wind up spending a lot of time relying on their character sheet instead of on their characters place in the game world when it comes to solving problems they are presented with. Although there is a place for all these different approaches to character advancement, tune in this week to hear me talk more about my own preferred methods, as well as my own house rules I've previously experimented with and others I am currently theory crafting! If you would like to reach out, you can reach me at [email protected] - I would love to hear from you!
