Listen "Zombie Brains: Your Brain Is Eating Itself, Kids!"
Episode Synopsis
Repetition is the mother of all learning. Well, now we know why. It's this consistent repetition that strengthens the neural pathways in our brains, a concept known as neuroplasticity. It's the science behind our ability to learn everything from playing the piano to mastering Voiceover. But did you know that we also need to 'unlearn' habits, and we do it through a process called synaptic pruning? It's like cleaning house of the old unwanted habits to make way for the new.
In this episode, I talk about the importance of sleep for our neurological health. I will mispronounce and stumble through the roles of microglial cells and astrocytes in our brains. There is some quiet renovation going on that keeps our brains in tip top shape, and when we are sleep deprived perfectly good cells get put out with yesterday's trash.
I share insights from my experience with sleep deprivation, current cognitive challenges, and how this information makes clear to me how important sleep is in stroke recovery.
If you've ever skimped on sleep and paid the price, this episode will hit home. Let's learn to prioritize rest, not just for recovery, but for the sake of our precious cognitive gardens.
Tune in as we explore why our brains just might be on the menu and how to ward off the zombie apocalypse within—it's a wake-up call for self-care. After all, in the garden of the mind, we want to cultivate dreams, not nightmares.
