Listen "Sober Socializing: My Go-To Game Plan"
Episode Synopsis
If your friends invited you to Baskin Robbins, but you couldn’t have any ice cream, would you still go? If you did, would you truly enjoy watching everyone indulge while you sipped on water? Could you stay fully present, savoring the companionship and conversation alone?
Attending an event where alcohol is present can pose some challenges for a recovering alcoholic. So, here’s what I do to be fully prepared and comfortable:
1. Choose my favorite non-alcoholic drink I’ll order – Coca Cola or seltzer with a splash of strawberry syrup is delectable!
2. Make sure I’m NOT Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired (H.A.L.T.) – these make me poopy
3. Have a way out – I drive myself and as soon as I’m not having fun, I’m out
4. Don’t stay longer than necessary – when others start slurring or spitting, I’m out
5. When asked if I want a drink, I say out loud, “I don’t drink” – I used to make excuses, and now I state my permanent and confident truth
6. Be prepared to practice standing with nothing in my hands – it might sound strange, but I practice being comfortable in my own skin
Even if I’m not drinking at an event, I could be thinking of drinking which can lead to considering drinking. It’s a slippery slope, and I tread very carefully.
