Listen "Liquid Courage and the Hangxiety That Follows"
Episode Synopsis
Alcohol's effect on the brain is powerful and pleasurable while it might us feel like we're invincible, like we can conquer the world. I'm lucky to be alive after drunk-surfing on the back of a moving truck headed down a two-lane highway at 60 mph. I'm fortunate to have made it safely home after walking miles in the middle of a pitch dark night with no street lights.
This false courage can lead to dire consequences. It might embolden you to speak your mind without a filter, but it can also provoke confrontations, start conflicts, and even result in decisions that can haunt you long after the buzz has worn off. Alcohol can be a crutch, self-medication, and leaning on it too heavily can lead to a downward spiral of anxiety, depression, and reliance on a substance that offers nothing more than a fleeting escape from reality. Not to mention the hangxiety that follows the next morning.
