Episode Synopsis

The Serenity Prayer is this pillar of hope for so many in recovery that are weaving through the ups and downs of sobriety as we learn and practice the 12 steps. But my understanding all began with repeating it—And I’m talking years here. I read it over and over, day after day. It wasn't until I reached step 10 that I really got it.
The steps preceding step 10 taught me how to practice deciphering when I am in control of an outcome and when I have to hand it over. Steps 1 through 9 also taught me about acceptance, whether I like a situation doesn't impact my acceptance of it. At step 10, which I live in, I learned the pause. This step allowed me to approach each situation one at a time, and respond thoughtfully, rather than just reacting on impulse. I learned that if I pause, I don’t have to go back later and make amends. Sometimes I have to pause for 5 minutes and sometimes it can be up to a week—whatever saves my relationship is how long I pause.

For me, this prayer, this pause, was key to building a foundation for my recovery in early sobriety. And its been something that is always echoing in my head.
