Listen "Emotional Maturity: The Art of the Pause"
Episode Synopsis
I’m 50, and yet my emotional maturity only kicked in a few years ago. It’s something I cultivate because it enhances relationships, decision-making, and overall mental health. It starts with recognizing my emotional triggers, like ‘why am I totally pissed right now?’, and pause long enough to figure out why I’ve been triggered. Like I mentioned yesterday, emotions should be signals for self-awareness, not triggers for behavior I’ll regret later.I’ve been practicing the pause for several years, challenging the narratives my emotions create. I’ll never graduate from the school of ME. I’m crazy complicated…or just crazy! One thing that’s helped is acknowledging that everyone is struggling in some way. Just like I want empathy and to be heard, I owe the same to others. I get to decide whether my love (or, in some cases, tolerance) is unconditional. If it is, I need to communicate without letting my emotions build walls. And if someone crosses my emotional boundaries, I can detach in a healthy way without guilt or shame. For me, naming my emotion gives me the pause I need before responding.Listen and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and YouTube.
