Listen "Emotional Jaywalking: Pause and Then Pause Again"
Episode Synopsis
Today's topic is jayalking through our emotions. I explore the parallels between jaywalking and how we can sometimes "emotionally jaywalk" in our lives.
There is a classic anecdote from the Big Book that compares jaywalking to alcoholism. The anecdote describes a jaywalker who repeatedly gets hit but continues to jaywalk, insisting each time would be different. It’s an effective metaphor—despite repeated negative outcomes, the pull of old habits is hard to resist.
Jaywalking can be emotional, too. We cross dangerous emotional roads without thinking about the consequences. It might be holding onto resentments, engaging in self-sabotage, or ignoring our boundaries. We are making risky emotional choices that could potentially hurt us or set back our recovery.
We may do it for the thrill, or perhaps we feel we deserved the struggle. It took me a while to realize—I don’t have to live like that. I don’t have to pick up a drink, and I don't have to live in pain.
Listen to this episode to hear more about avoiding emotional jaywalks, recognizing our patterns, and pausing to contemplate if there is a safer route. Often there is!
Today we have a brave listener who came forward to share her story, focusing on how she recognized her behaviors and the steps she took to change.
