Listen "Disability Guilt: Being Disabled Is Not Your Fault"
Episode Synopsis
Today I'm talking about guilt. I discuss why disability guilt occurs, its negative effects on our well-being, and how to manage it effectively. Guilt is a common emotion among those living with disabilities, including myself.
Guilt is derived from both what we can’t do and how our condition impacts those around us. We might feel we’re not contributing enough to our households or relationships. This guilt can be overwhelming, but it's essential to remember that it’s not our fault.
Guilt can wreak havoc on both our mental and physical health and can create a vicious cycle against our well-being.
In this episode, I talk about recognizing the source of guilty thoughts, practicing self-compassion, and appreciating what we can do. To top it off, I encourage you to allow caregivers to experience the rewards of their service by avoiding negativity.
If guilt is persistent and negatively impacting your mental or physical health, seek help from a professional. They can help you identify the root of your guilt and develop strategies to cope with it.
