Listen "Accepting My Vestibular Disorder: Listening to the Super Bowl"
Episode Synopsis
Instead of watching the Super Bowl, I’m learning to enjoy football by listening. It’s taken practice, but by closing my eyes I can accurately keep track of the game and even get excited when others do. I have a permanent disability because of my vestibular disorder. Constant movement on a screen, or otherwise in my environment, gives me unbearable discomfort. I accepted the permanence of my disability so I can find new creative ways to have fun. Now, I fully embrace it, sitting close by the TV to catch the play-by-play calls, while soaking in the game-day energy of those watching it with me.I shifted my perspective in recovery. I must accept the things I can’t change to find new ways to enjoy life. Emily and Sarah are coming over, and they’ve taken it upon themselves to perform the halftime show for me, a tradition they started last year. We have an over-the-top spread of wings, chips, pizza, and even Post Malone Oreos (which are fricking amazing). And while I can’t physically see the game, I can hear every moment and feel the excitement in the room. Acceptance isn’t settling. It opens doors to enjoy life despite any challenge.
