In the children’s ward of Shingle’s Hospital, the nights are long and full of whispers. Toys leap from beds. Dolls twitch across the floor. One night, he watches as a small figure—translucent, glowing faintly—tries to cradle a fallen doll, only to realize her hands pass through it. Then she looks up, sees him, and smiles.

Soon, there are eight of them—boys and girls between five and ten, playing silently among the living. They can’t speak, but they can show him things: images, gestures, emotions. Until the day he discovers the hospital lab… and the rows of glass jars holding eight small fetuses.
