She also shares about her journey of emotionally leaving the group, beyond the physical leaving, and how she built a new life with creativity, community, and a commitment to integrating grief.  As the daughter of Cuban immigrants, Mari was raised in Miami, and currently lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest. Her career has taken her from social worker to midwife, to her current role as a registered nurse and grief revolutionary. Mari is passionate about breaking down the social barriers around grief & the stigma attached to it. Over the last two decades, she has had the privilege of ushering hundreds through the passage of life and death. Mari is a co-founder and editor of the Grief Rites Foundation, where art is used as agency to live boldly with grief. By curating monthly readings, publishing articles, & facilitating workshops, Grief Rites creates the space for grief stories to be witnessed.
