Psalm, Chapter 109Vengeance Invoked upon Adversaries.For the choir director. A Psalm of David.109 O God of my praise, Do not be silent!-          The title is worth noting-          Vengeance invoked (to ask the judge to take action)-          Upon Adversaries (one’s opponent; as in a contest, or battle)-          Yes, David asked God take vengeance upon his adversaries-          It’s a song so it was meant to be remembered-          It’s for the choir director which means it would be taught to others to sing-          O God of my praise (notice the opening part of the prayer)o   God is the one who causes us to praise-          Do not be silent!o   This means David wants God to answer this request right away (audibly) 2 For they have opened the [a]wicked and deceitful mouth against me; They have spoken [b]against me with a lying tongue. 3 They have also surrounded me with words of hatred, And fought against me without cause.-          David gives the reason for his requesto   They opened the wicked and deceitful mouth against me (talking smack)o   They lied about meo   They surround me with words of hatredo   And fought against me without cause (was not provoked; undeserved action)o   Maybe someone  has lied about you or is fighting against you without cause§  And you didn’t do anything to provoke it4 In return for my love they act as my accusers; But I am in prayer.-          In return for my love they act as my accusers o   David gave loveo   They returned accusations (returned evil for good)-          But I am in prayero   David’s response was to pray not take revenge himselfo   This is the best way to respond (pray for them)5 Thus they have [c]repaid me evil for good And hatred for my love.-          They repaid evil for good (the opposite of what should have happened)-          And hatred for my love (the opposite of love is hatred)6 Appoint a wicked man over him, And let an [d]accuser stand at his right hand. 7 When he is judged, let him come forth guilty, And let his prayer become sin.-          David does the unthinkable-          Now he asks God to appoint wicked man over him (give him the same treatment)Intro to Outbless Weekly Thanks for listening to Outbless.com
