Baron von Munchausen was a real 18th century German military officer whose name will forever be linked with lying. But the real Munchausen wasn't as much a liar as he was a great storyteller. And his storytelling is what drew the attention of a con artist who was willing to capitalize off of it and create one of the greatest book and film series of all time.
