Listen "Wycliffe Gordon and BYU Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band"
Episode Synopsis
In this one hour jam session with BYU’s Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band the legendary Wycliffe Gordon (with his trusty plunger mute) makes the trombone purr, growl, bark and rumble. And he sings on a few tracks to boot!
The Jazz Journalists Association has awarded Wycliffe Gordon the “Trombonist of the Year Award” eight times including the last three years in a row. In addition to trombone he plays trumpet, tuba, cornet and the Didgeridoo. He’s currently faculty at the Manhattan School of Music where he composes, conducts and teaches.
The Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band has been a BYU staple for 30 years. The ensemble plays New Orleans style jazz and concertizes throughout the United States. They’ve played at the Kennedy Center for the Performing arts in Washington DC and regularly collaborate with jazz greats in the industry.
Today they play South Rampart Street Parade, The Mooche, Bill Bailey, Won’t you please come home, Someday You’ll be Sorry, Lazy River and Limehouse Blues.
