Listen "#05 The importance of a Bereavement Policy in schools with Head Teacher, Kate Owbridge"

Episode Synopsis

It's not yet mandatory for schools to have a bereavement policy, which is odd because according to research done by Child Bereavement UK, 1 child in every class is bereaved. In view of the Pandemic death rate tipping over 60k people, I was curious to find out if this had prompted change, and who better to talk to than Kate Owbridge, Executive Head Teacher at Ashdown Primary in East Sussex, whose school bereavement policy was recommended to me by one of its parents.Teachers are also facing an unprecedented challenge in the classroom. Without a bereavement policy, they need support and guidance to help children cope with grief and loss so they are not left with lasting anxiety and fear.We talk about 3 key considerations:1/ Child-centred framework - why it's important to have this at the heart of any policy, which enables all school staff to respond empathically to bereaved children.2/ Flexibility and creativity - why being flexible, and creative is key to helping bereaved children feel safe enough in school to grieve, knowing that staff care enables them to respond in the moment to their needs.3/ Parental relationships - why and how her school works so diligently to build good relationships with parents, a two-way dialogue that helps staff stay informed, and parents in the loop.If you are looking for advice about what really works in school in relation to bereavement, and much more, you won't want to miss this episode. And you can download my free guide - 7 Steps to Help Teachers Support Children with Grief, Loss, and Change here.www.amandaseyderhelm.comLinkedIn @amandaseyderhelmTwitter @TheKidDecoderEmail [email protected]
