Listen "79 - Patrick Downey on the Bible as Serious Comedy"
Episode Synopsis
In this interview with Patrick Downey, we discuss his book Serious Comedy in which he makes the case that the Bible is a work of comedy. “Because of the Bible we inherit the expectation that we can live serious lives in writing; but because we no longer believe in the one divine poet who could make this possible, the joke is always on us for we can no longer take our own comedies seriously.” Patrick and I discuss the philosophy of Plato, Aristotle, Schmitt, and Machiavelli. We explore how the tension between comedy and tragedy plays out in our world today in art and politics.
