Even though shepherds often had a bad rep, we find them leading God's people throughout the Bible. Abraham was a shepherd, and so were Moses and David. Jesus referred to Himself as the good shepherd. So it makes sense that when the angel brought "good news of great joy," it would be to shepherds.

About this series: Angels play a central role in the Christmas story, delivering the good news of great joy foretold by Isaiah: “Unto us, a child is born.” While their messages were directed to Zechariah, Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds, they are also meant for us today. This season, the joy of Christmas comes alive as we reflect on the wonder of what has been given “unto us.”
