Listen "Major Trade-Offs: Prof. Corey Moss-Pech Reveals the Surprising Truths of College and Careers"
Episode Synopsis
Major Trade-Offs by sociologist Prof. Corey Moss-Pech offers an eye-opening exploration of the relationship between college majors and entry-level jobs. Challenging the misconception that humanities majors lack practical skills, Prof. Moss-Pech reveals how these graduates effectively utilize their education in the workforce. Through nearly 200 interviews with students from engineering, business, English, and communications, he uncovers that while practical majors often secure structured internships leading to well-paid but clerical jobs, liberal arts majors, though less supported, demonstrate their skills once employed. This episode urges a revaluation of liberal arts education, advocating for greater support and recognition of its value in preparing students for the workforce.
Dr. Corey is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Florida State University. His research explores how individuals navigate educational institutions and labor markets to understand stratification and social mobility, with a particular focus on gender inequality. Motivated by changes in the economy that lead to less stable jobs and higher costs of education, he examines how these factors influence career paths and higher education decisions, emphasizing intersecting inequalities such as gender, race, and class.
Before joining Florida State University, Prof. Corey was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Sociology Department at the University of Michigan. Prof. Corey earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from The Ohio State University, an M.A. in Sociology from The New School for Social Research, and a B.A. in Political Science from George Washington University.
