Fascination . David defeated Goliath. . Moses parted the Red Sea. . Jesus paid the price for humanity’s salvation. . Heroes do heroic things. Sunday school teachers would rave about such people in the Bible, going on for hours about their bravery and determination. Yet, how often do we hear about the heroics of Isaac and how he stood apart from the others? Not often, yet it is something we cannot overlook. . While Isaac was no mighty hero like Samson or David, he had a trait that some of the greatest biblical legends did not possess. His obedience. When Abraham heard the call from God to sacrifice his only son, Isaac did not struggle or refuse to take part in it. Historians confirm that Isaac was about twenty or so years of age, more than capable of overpowering his aging father and escaping his fate. Instead, Isaac discarded his hopes and dreams, his entire future, and obeyed his father completely. He recognized the importance of his obedience to his father and that of his father to God. . When it came time for Isaac to be married, to choose a wife, he instead obeyed his father’s wishes for a servant to select the right match. This symbolizes the Holy Spirit choosing our significant other for us instead of us using our human ways to enter marriage. In addition, we see Isaac’s innocence and obedience to his father, something unprecedented and rarely seen throughout the Bible. Jesus is another example, obeying His Father even until death! While Isaac’s life might not be filled with heroic battles or legendary feats, his character alone solidifies his spot as one of the biblical greats.
