Listen "Cathy O'Dowd: Adventure Awaits: Embracing the Unknown and Life Beyond Climbing /Ep 3602"
Episode Synopsis
Cathy O'Dowd was the first South African (of either sex) to climb Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain, and the first woman in the world to climb Everest, from both its north and south sides. Her first ascent of Everest, in 1996, happened in the midst of the chaotic events that form of the basis of the 'true story' behind the Hollywood movie Everest. She made one last expedition to Everest in 2003, to try a new route on the Kangshung face. She has written a book about her Everest experiences, called Just For The Love Of It. Cathy's most challenging Himalayan epic was as part of team forging a new route on an 8000 metre peak. Although Cathy herself did not reach the summit, two of her teammates did, doing the first ascent of Nanga Parbat via the Mazeno ridge, and winning the prestigious Piolet d'Or for their achievement. Cathy has been a professional motivational speaker for nearly 30 years and has presented her message to companies in 47 countries on six continents. She uses her Himalayan experiences to create innovative and entertaining casestudies, illustrating what it takes for top performers to achieve big goals in high risk, high stress environments. The Professional Speaking Association of UK/Ireland have given her their highest award, the Professional Speaking Award of Excellence. Cathy lives in Andorra, in the Pyrenees mountains, from where she pursues her speaking career, and explores the mountains of the world. A believer in life-long learning, she has expanded her interest in climbing to add in ski-mountaineering, and now canyoning and sea kayaking. Find out more at her website http://cathyodowd.com. Her day-to-day adventures as a speaker and adventurer can be followed on Instagram @CathyODowd. Previous Episode 2834 (2020) Previous Episode 860 (2016)
